Godesverder 1378
Godesverder - Livonian medieval settlement is situated in a charming, natural meadow, surrounded by forest in Turaida, not far from the historical medieval gallow-hill. The very name of Godesverder derives from the lower-German language and literally means “ Island of God”. By creating Godesverder our intention is to give a chance to everyone – both the inhabitants of the historical Livonia and our guests to travel in time, introducing the history of medieval Livonia through individual empiric experience. Our objective is to create the surroundings that would characterize Livonia in the second part of the XIV century, and by experimenting and testing – to give new life to the period of our common history that has been undeservedly forgotten. We wish to render each of our guests at least few hours, but could be days as well, to feel the natural rhythm of life, by trying, testing and doing – to deepen one’s knowledge of the history of medieval Livonia, to question and receive the answers from the people who work in the field of Livonian historical reconstruction. On daily basis we offer different kinds of historical activities, the purpose of which is to demonstrate how to manage different tools, technologies and weapons of the XIV century, and, meanwhile – through the empirically developed experience to revise some of the historical regularities in more critical and realistic light. ![]() |
